PIG statement of Inclusivity:
PIG is an affiliate of Society of Inclusive Blacksmiths (SIBs), an organization that seeks to build equity and diversity in blacksmithing. It’s no secret that blacksmithing is hegemonic and tends not to amplify all voices. At PIG, we believe in more than a passive “all are welcome” policy. We specifically encourage women, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+ and people with disabilities to come by the shop for a visit, lessons, coaching, or just to hang out in a place where they can feel safe. Additionally, people who express hate or resentment toward others or people who try to “gatekeep” the craft of blacksmithing are specifically not welcome and will be asked to leave. Please reach out on our contact page for any questions about blacksmithing, how to get more involved in SIBs, or how we might better serve underrepresented groups in blacksmithing.
We commit to being empathetic, open-minded and accountable when we inevitably make mistakes. Making mistakes and being ignorant are part of being human, but so are empathy and self-reflection. Everyone at PIG, owners, employees, visitors, guests and friends will be held to the standards set by the SIBs code of conduct: Be aware, be empathetic, and be open to learning and changing.
Note: Our shop is located in a basement which may make it difficult for people with certain disabilities to access. However, we have a service entrance at the back with a ramp and PIG is dedicated to doing everything reasonably possible to make the shop an inclusive space. If you have a specific disability or need specific accommodations, please reach out on via our contact page and we can try and work something out to help you.
